Update

August 10th, 2008

It’s been a month since my last post and due to life getting in the way I’ve slipped behind. Work continues on finishing up the making of Gladiators Trails II, the last few pages are almost done and ready to be uploaded. Hopefully it won’t be much more of a wait.

Development of the new game has been on hold until I’m able to buy a new mac, which should be by the end of the month. I’m switching development environments, moving to a new engine for the game. All is not lost as I plan to use the old code for the game’s editor and save myself a few months of re-doing old work in the new engine.

The big news is that for the month of August Gladiator Trials II’s price has been slashed from $24.95 to $14.95, a saving of $10! So for those that still haven’t purchased the game I think now is a great time to do it. I hope to have some better news in the next few weeks, including at least one new chapter in the making of series.

Late post

July 13th, 2008

I was planning on posting a new chapter this week but unfortunately my computer died last week. I just purchased and received a few new parts on the weekend so I’m a little behind in schedule. I figured it was worth getting an upgrade rather than just replace some parts of aging technology, so I now sport a phenom tri-core cpu and joined the ddr2 generation :)

Onto more important news, the next chapter of the making of Gladiator Trails II will be ready for release next week. The chapter will focus on moving from the planned expansion to the beginnings of Gladiator Trials II.  :D

Making of GTII - Chapter 6 Released

June 29th, 2008

So we’ve past the release of Gladiator Trials, gone over the failure of GT:Online, and are now into the next failure… The planned expansion and re-write of Gladiator Trials. Who would have thought that one game had so many bad starts? While there isn’t any new screenshots to go alongside this new chapter I did decide to release the design document for the planned expansion to Gladiator Trials, subtitled “Dark Times”.

It’s barely a design document mind you, missing a few hundred pages to really be used to design a complete game. But it gives you an idea of what I had in mind and how the game would have played. There’s alot of elements that made it into GTII, and alot more that didn’t. It’s only 15 pages, so go ahead and read it :-)

For those that miss the link, here it is. It’s getting close to the end of the series, which means it’s getting closer to the announcement of the next game. I’ll let you know that it wasn’t easy deciding on the follow-up to Gladiator Trials II, and I have gone through several games before finally settling on one. But let’s leave all that to the last chapter ;-) Enjoy.

Next chapter of the making of GTII

June 8th, 2008

A little overdue, but the next chapter in the making of Gladiator Trials II has been released. Check it out here. It goes into details of the planned multiplayer portion of Gladiator Trials.

The making of GTII is now at the half-way mark, I will try to release the rest of the chapters, on a weekly basis. Which should bring the complete history of the game online by early July. The last chapter will officially announce the next game by Tagged Software, which is long overdue :)

Next GTII chapter

May 10th, 2008

The next chapter in the making of Gladiator Trials II has been uploaded, http://www.gladiatortrials2.com/makingof/

I released a few updates to the Mac version of GTII over the last week and will prepare and release the windows update shortly.

I’ve also been busy the past few weeks working on a new game, everything is going great and I expect to announce what it is in the coming weeks. For now, enjoy the next chapter in the GTII making of.

GTII update and new chapter in making of

April 20th, 2008

It’s a week late but the next chapter in the making of Gladiator Trails II has just been uploaded, head over to the site and enjoy the read. The 3rd chapter has lots of never before seen screenshots of a very early version of Gladiator Trials, so see what the game looked like while in early production.

I officially released the version 1.2.2 update for Gladiator Trials II today, it fixes a bug in the arena messaging code which caused scenario 4 to freeze at certain key points. The mac version has had a bit of polish done to the DMG file, I added an image to the background of the folder which serves to inform users that they need to copy the game to their hard drive before playing.

Next chapter

April 9th, 2008

It was a bit of a delay from my last post, unfortunately I was without the internet for a few weeks while moving house. Finally the next chapter of the making of GTII is up, so head over and have a read now.

I’ll be compiling the latest version of Gladiator Trials II, 1.2.2, and releasing that shortly to save new users from downloading a patch. It fixes a bug found in scenario 4 which caused the game to freeze at the arena.

I’ll be posting up the 3rd chapter of the making of GTII this weekend.

First chapter of “The making of GTII”

March 14th, 2008

As stated in the previous blog, I’ve been working on a making of for Gladiator Trials II starting when I first had the idea of the game (back in 2004) to the current version available today. I hope it will be an interesting read to both those who enjoy the game and anyone who is involved in game development. I originally intended to do a simple postmortem, but felt I could do a bigger job and hopefully include much more value than a postmortem can achieve.

Feel free to comment on the blog, forum or via email about the first chapter. I won’t hold any dates to when the rest will be finished just yet, but I’ll be sure to update on the progress from time to time on the blog.

In other news I’ve updated the Gladiator Trials II manual to reflect the changes from v1.2 and included some minor updates here and there. I’m working on getting the rest of the manual completed, hopefully the basic and advance sections will be completed in the next few weeks.

I’ve finally started work on the GTII postmortem, although it’s more than just a simple postmortem as it goes through the history of the game from it’s beginnings back in 2004 to the latest version 1.2.0. I’m not sure when it’ll be completed, but it’ll span quite a few pages of text and come with alot of screenshots ranging from the very first mockup’s and many unreleased screenshots showing off the game during it’s development, to what it is today. I’ll be sure to post a sneak preview sometime in the next week or two for those interested, and keep everyone updated on how it’s progressing.

Lastly, many are probably wondering what I am working on now. Well I can’t reveal any specific game details, but I have decided to change my programming engine and move into the realm of 3D. I just recently decided on my toolset and so it’ll take a few weeks getting used to it before I actually start coding anything new. Currently I have two game designs that I am deciding on, once I pick one I will start blogging alot more about the game for those eager for new details.

Gladiator Trials II - version 1.2 Released!

January 27th, 2008

Head on over to the forum for the full change log.

It’s been alot of hard work getting this update done, especially with the sharp decline of free time, but it’s finally ready. I hope everyone enjoys the changes, remember to tell your friends and family, better yet pass on a copy of the demo for them to enjoy… oh and don’t forget to buy your copy as well, to support a struggling indie developer! ;-)

For now, it’s time to do a little marketing.
